Where is your place in the world?

How can writing about the world around you help you understand the world around you? From the tree in your backyard to the insects around it, we all have a place in an interconnected world. What happens if we overstep our place, or worse, someone upstream from us oversteps theirs?

In the wake of COVID-19, understanding our relationship to our ecosystem has become even more important as we are forced to find new ways to connect with our communities, our world, and our selves. Join us in a week-long online writing camp to explore these ideas and look for answers to these questions:

  • Where is your place in the world and who shares it with you?
  • Who gets to make decisions about environmental issues and green spaces in your community?
  • Whose voice should be represented in conversation about environmental justice?
  • Why should a healthy working ecosystem matter to you and your neighbors?
  • What inspires others to act?

In this online camp, writers will combine creativity with research, argumentation, and narrative writing to explore the world around them. Write Here, Write Now!: Social and Environmental Action Writing Camp [Online Edition] allows students to explore ecological literacy through virtual excursions at the Nina Mason Pulliam EcoLab, as well as in their own neighborhoods, through observation, interaction, and writing.

Over the course of a week, writers in the Write Here, Write Now!: Social and Environmental Action Writing Camp [Online Edition] will work closely with instructors and peers to practice a range of creative, persuasive and poetic place-based writing activities. Writers will learn about the environment around them, read prominent environmental writers' works, and develop their voice through online collaboration, focused instruction, and highly interactive writing exercises.

Regardless if students live in an urban, suburban or rural environment, the Write Here, Write Now!: Social and Environmental Action Writing Camp [Online Edition] is a unique opportunity to learn how to write about issues in ways that will inspire others to act.
